Terms of use

Plain terms for a free tool. The important one is the third section: BecSpec helps you find candidates, it does not tell you what to buy.

Last updated 9 August 2026.

1. What BecSpec is

BecSpec provides free search and comparison tools over publicly available, openly licensed product registration data. Using the site means accepting these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the site.

2. No account, no charge

The tools are provided free of charge with no account. We may change, suspend or withdraw any part of the site at any time. BecSpec is an experiment and its scope will change.

3. The tools are not professional advice

This is the part that matters. BecSpec matches specifications against a dataset. It does not assess whether a product is suitable for your application, and a result is not a recommendation, an endorsement, or a statement that a product will work in your installation.

Every selector publishes a limitations page setting out what its source data cannot tell you. Those limitations are part of these terms, not a footnote to them. Selection, installation, electrical work and compliance decisions must be confirmed with the manufacturer, the supplier, or an appropriately qualified engineer, electrician or contractor.

You are responsible for verifying anything you rely on before you buy or install it.

4. Accuracy of the data

Source data comes from third-party registration databases and is supplier-submitted. It contains errors, omissions and inconsistencies, some of which we document openly. BecSpec normalises and presents that data but does not warrant that it is accurate, complete or current.

We ship dated snapshots rather than querying sources live, so a product's status may have changed since ingestion. Where BecSpec derives or calculates a value, that is labelled as such and carries the rule used.

5. Source data and attribution

The selectors currently draw on data from the Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water GEMS registration database, used under CC BY 3.0 AU. BecSpec is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting for that Department.

Manufacturer and product names are the trade marks of their owners and are used only to identify the products described. Their appearance implies no relationship with, or endorsement by, those owners. See our data policy for how we source data and what we will not ingest.

6. Our own content

The site's text, design, matching rules and derived fields are BecSpec's. You are welcome to link to any page. Please do not republish substantial parts of the site or scrape it systematically; the underlying government data is openly licensed and available from its publisher, and we would rather you took it from the source.

7. Liability

The site is provided "as is". To the extent permitted by law, BecSpec excludes all warranties and is not liable for any loss or damage arising from use of, or reliance on, the site or its results — including cost of goods purchased, installation costs, downtime, or consequential loss.

Nothing in these terms excludes rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law that cannot lawfully be excluded. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to resupplying the service, which for a free tool means providing access to it again.

8. Commercial relationships

BecSpec has no commercial relationship with any manufacturer or distributor, and ranking is produced entirely by published matching rules. If that changes, it will be labelled on the results themselves, not buried here. See vendor neutrality.

9. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Australia.

10. Contact
