Where the cabinet data comes from.

This selector is built on a single dataset. BecSpec's site-wide sourcing rules, origin labels and neutrality commitments are on the data policy page; this page covers what is specific to cabinets.

The source

Refrigerated cabinets supplied in Australia must be registered under the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (GEMS) scheme. The register covers display cabinets, storage cabinets, ice-cream freezer cabinets and scooping cabinets.

What the register carries

Cabinet type and description, temperature class, climate class, duty type, overall dimensions, tested energy consumption, efficiency index and star rating, brand and model, and the registration number with its expiry date.

Dimensions are the reason this selector can answer a question the motor finder cannot: 99.4% of registrations state all three of frontage, depth and height.

This file merges several regulatory generations

The export combines registrations made under different instruments — around 5,769 under the Refrigerated Cabinets Determination 2024, 1,691 under the 2020 Regulations Schedule 2B, and a small tail under earlier ones. Each generation used its own columns, so the same fact can live in either of two places depending on how old a registration is.

BecSpec reads the current column first and falls back to the legacy one, recording which answered rather than pretending they are the same field. Two column pairs differ only by capitalisation and are genuinely different fields, which any case-insensitive reader would silently merge.

Values BecSpec derives

  • Refrigeration type — read from the wording of the registered cabinet description, because the structured field is populated on only about 3% of rows. Labelled Derived wherever it was obtained this way.
  • Annualised energy — tested 24-hour consumption × 365. The test runs at the cabinet's rated climate class, so real consumption in a hotter room, with heavier door traffic or a warmer product load, will be higher.
  • Climate class from legacy rows — older registrations pack climate and temperature class into one token, such as 3L1, and sometimes list several. BecSpec takes the leading digit of each and keeps the lowest, because that is the only ambient proven across all of them.

Data quality in this snapshot

  • 7,457 of 7,500 registrations state all three dimensions.
  • 6,075 make the refrigeration type determinable.
  • 1,505 state a net volume — so that field is absent on most records rather than zero.
  • 1,726 carry an expiry date beyond 2060, which looks like a data-entry artefact rather than a real term. BecSpec reports these as supplied and flags the registration status as unconfirmed rather than silently correcting them.
