Ford SYNC 3 CarPlay: when you need a cable, not a new stereo
SYNC 3 already supports wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on the Australian configurations we have verified. If it is not launching, start with the USB/data path before assuming the head unit needs replacing.
SYNC 3 is a wired setup
Use the vehicle USB port with a data-capable cable. If CarPlay or Android Auto does not start, check the phone permissions, cable and SYNC settings first.
Can SYNC 3 software be updated?
Ford supports software updating through its owner/VIN-specific process. That is different from a universal firmware number that applies to every car, so BecSpec does not publish a made-up one-size-fits-all version.
Can older SYNC be upgraded to SYNC 3 or SYNC 4 with software?
No general software jump is established. Ford says older SYNC generations use different hardware and software, so a normal software update does not turn SYNC or SYNC 2 into a newer generation.
What about SYNC 4A?
On the Ranger and Everest configurations we have verified with SYNC 4A, Ford documents wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. That is a different platform, not simply a SYNC 3 setting you can enable.
Bottom line
If your car has SYNC 3, troubleshoot the wired USB connection first. If it has an older SYNC generation, do not assume a download will add CarPlay. Use the checker to identify the path for the exact vehicle.
