33 NTGC substances change treatment from 1 December 2026
Safe Work Australia identifies 33 airborne contaminants as non-threshold genotoxic carcinogens (NTGCs). From 1 December 2026 they no longer have numeric exposure limits in the WEL list.
Published NTGC list
Acrylamide; Acrylonitrile (vinyl cyanide); Allyl chloride; Allyl glycidyl ether; Anisidine (o, p-isomers); o-Anisidine; p-Anisidine; Benzidine; (bis)chloromethyl ether; 1,3-Butadiene; Catechol; beta-Chloroprene; Chromium VI compounds (including zinc chromates); Coal tar pitch volatiles (as benzene solubles); 1,2-Dibromo ethane; 3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine; Diethyl sulfate; Dimethycarbamoyl chloride; Dimethyl sulfate; Dinitrotoluene; Ethylene dichloride (1,2-Dichloroethane); Ethylene oxide (oxirane); Ethylenimine (aziridine); Hydrazine; Lead chromate (as Cr); 4,4’-Methylene bis(2-chloroaniline) (MOCA/MBOCA); 2-Nitrotoluene; Propane sultone; Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon mixture when containing benzo[a]pyrene; Tetranitromethane; Urethane; Vinyl bromide; Vinyl chloride monomer.
What changes
Safe Work Australia states that a practical protective exposure level cannot be assigned to these NTGCs. From 1 December 2026 there will no longer be numeric exposure limits for them. Until 30 November 2026, the current respective WES values continue to apply alongside existing risk-management obligations.
