Process-generated airborne contaminants and the 2026 WEL transition

A chemical register tells you what products are brought into a workplace. It may not tell you what the work itself generates. That distinction matters when preparing for Australia's Workplace Exposure Limits from 1 December 2026.

Inventory screening has a blind spot

Safe Work Australia describes airborne contaminants as including dusts, gases, fumes, vapours and mists. These can be released by work processes, so a transition review should consider both substances used and contaminants generated.

Examples of process context that can matter

Cutting, grinding and drilling

Mechanical work can generate fine dust that is not represented by the trade name of the original material. The relevant WEL entry may depend on the respirable or inhalable fraction.

Welding and thermal work

Welding, cutting and other hot processes can generate fumes and gases whose exposure-limit treatment is not captured simply by listing the parent metal or consumable.

Diesel-powered plant

Diesel engine emissions are generated during operation rather than purchased as a chemical product. The WEL list includes a new entry for diesel particulate matter expressed as respirable elemental carbon.

Spraying, heating and mixing

A task can change the form in which a substance becomes airborne. Vapour, aerosol, mist or particulate applicability may therefore need task-specific review.

Why the substance name may not be enough

Several WEL families distinguish physical form or particle fraction. If an inventory only says "aluminium", "manganese" or another broad substance name, that may not identify whether a dust, fume, inhalable fraction or respirable fraction is the applicable listing. A conservative screen should flag this as a review question, not silently select a row.

A practical two-part check

1. Screen the inventory: identify substances you intentionally use that appear in the WES→WEL transition evidence.

2. Review the processes: separately list tasks that can generate airborne contaminants, then check the current WEL material and any relevant guidance for those contaminants.
