Can a VPP or retailer override my battery schedule?
Yes, depending on the service and system architecture. A VPP is specifically designed to coordinate batteries across many homes, so local behaviour may differ from a simple “charge cheap, discharge peak” rule.
What a VPP can do
Australian Government guidance describes a VPP as a coordinated network of batteries operated by a retailer or other organisation. Tesla's Australian VPP documentation gives concrete examples: the platform may charge from the grid, export stored energy, or hold a battery in standby in response to market or grid conditions.

Why this can look like a fault
You might expect the battery to discharge at 6pm because peak tariffs have started, while the VPP is preserving charge for a later event. Or you might expect it to remain empty overnight while the controller grid-charges it ahead of a forecast event.
Local schedule versus external command
The exact priority differs by product. Some OEM platforms also expose local EMS/Modbus or self-consumption controls that can influence time-dependent rules. The useful question is therefore not just “what schedule did I enter?” but “which controller currently has authority over the battery?”
VPP-capable does not mean VPP-enrolled
Current federal battery support requires VPP capability for relevant on-grid batteries, but participation itself is not compulsory. A battery can therefore be VPP-capable without an external service actively controlling it.
