Water rate is not the chemical dose.

Australian crop-protection labels can state a product rate, a carrier-water volume, a final spray volume, or more than one of these at once. They answer different questions. BecSpec keeps them separate so a hydraulic instruction is never mistaken for a chemical dose.

The short version

Product rate tells you how much registered product is used. Carrier water is the water component used to carry that product. Applied spray volume is the final liquid mixture physically discharged. They are not interchangeable.

Why the distinction matters

A label may say, for example, to use a minimum number of litres of water per hectare. That does not tell you to apply that many litres of herbicide per hectare. Conversely, a product dose in mL/ha or L/ha does not tell you the hydraulic volume the boom, aircraft or other equipment must deliver.

BecSpec therefore does not turn every number followed by “L/ha” into the same field. The surrounding label wording has to establish what the number represents before it can become machine-readable application guidance.

The three fields BecSpec keeps apart

Why context can change the water rate

Application volume is sometimes conditional. Crop canopy, weed density, terrain, temperature, application method, tank-mix partner or another label condition can change the applicable value. When that happens, BecSpec does not publish one “general” number and bury the exception in prose. The condition has to be represented structurally, or that rule stays unpublished.

A concrete example is Sabakem Moxypyr Herbicide: reviewed ground-boom uses have a 70 L/ha minimum in the standard coverage condition and a 100 L/ha minimum when the crop is very leafy or total weed density exceeds 200 plants/m². The context is part of the rule, not a footnote.

Aerial and ground instructions are not inherited

An aerial water-volume instruction does not automatically apply to a ground-boom use, and product-level wording that mentions aircraft does not automatically authorise aircraft for every registered use. BecSpec attaches an application rule only when the current product, exact PubCRIS use, method and any controlling context can be joined safely.

Recommended is not the same as mandatory

BecSpec also preserves whether a value is a hard label constraint or a recommendation. “Use at least 100 L/ha” and “100 L/ha is recommended” should not become the same machine rule. Where the wording does not justify a mandatory minimum or maximum, the tool does not promote it into one.

What to do before spraying

Use BecSpec as a structured reading aid, not as a replacement for the current registered label. Confirm the product, exact use, application method, dose, water or spray volume, droplet requirement, buffers, weather limits and any other conditions on the current APVMA label. Then calibrate and check the actual equipment output.

The application examples linked from this page were checked against current APVMA product/use identity and first-party label evidence on 28 August 2026. BecSpec deliberately leaves unresolved or context-dependent instructions unpublished rather than filling gaps by inference.
