Ordinary daytime charging
Your EV charges while rooftop solar happens to be generating. This does not prove the charger is measuring surplus solar or automatically following export.
“Charges from solar” can mean several different things. The useful question is whether the charger, inverter, meter/controller, battery and software path in your actual home are explicitly supported together.
Your EV charges while rooftop solar happens to be generating. This does not prove the charger is measuring surplus solar or automatically following export.
The system measures household import/export and adjusts EV charging to use available excess solar. That generally depends on an evidenced meter, gateway, inverter or control-stack relationship.
A stationary battery adds another control objective. Some ecosystems can coordinate EV charging with battery state or operating mode; others can compete for the same surplus. BecSpec therefore treats battery interaction separately.
Off-peak scheduling, retailer plans and dynamic tariffs are not the same feature as solar tracking. A charger can support one and not the other.
Solar optimisation is often implemented through an ecosystem-specific meter, inverter communications path or energy-management controller. Brand similarity is not enough. A documented Fronius path does not become a SolarEdge path; a legacy Sungrow inverter does not inherit a current Sungrow hybrid integration merely because the logo matches.
BecSpec reuses its existing Australian inverter identity layer and applies capability-specific relationships to the charger. If the selected inverter does not satisfy the known prerequisites, the feature is shown as unsupported, conditional or not evidenced rather than guessed.
Tesla's Australian ecosystem is a useful example. Ordinary Wall Connector charging, Dynamic Power Management, Charge on Solar and rate-plan charging have different prerequisites. A non-Tesla EV can be physically chargeable from a Tesla Wall Connector without automatically gaining Tesla-specific solar behaviour. Likewise, adding a Powerwall does not make every charger ecosystem battery-integrated.
Fronius, Enphase, Sungrow, SolarEdge and GoodWe also document distinct meter, inverter, battery or control prerequisites. The BecSpec checker stores these as separate capability edges rather than a single “compatible” flag.
No. PV-surplus charging can exist without a stationary battery when the charger/control system can measure available export and modulate EV load. A battery can change the economics and control behaviour, but it is not a universal prerequisite for solar EV charging.
Start with the exact EV and existing solar inverter. Add the stationary battery if there is one, choose the dwelling supply phase, and either select a charger or leave the charger blank to compare the bounded evidenced cohort. The result separates ordinary charging, useful AC rate, solar surplus, load management, battery interaction, tariff control and V2X.
See why three-phase does not automatically mean 22 kW charging.
